How to use the Cause List

A short, point-wise guide to finding your matter, reading the list and knowing when your court will reach it.

Open the cause list

Quick start

  1. Pick the date.
  2. Type your case number, diary number, party or AOR code in Search — or pick your court.
  3. Read your matter's item number, then check the court's hearing order and any sequence posted on the board.

1Choose a date

  • The Date row shows the last three sitting days and every day already listed ahead. The current choice is highlighted.
  • Older dates are in the Earlier… dropdown at the end of the row. Lists are kept for about 60 days.
  • The page opens on today's list, or on the next day that has a list.
  • The Court usually publishes the next day's list in the evening. We check for new and revised lists every 15 minutes, 8:30 AM to 11:15 PM. A revised list replaces the old one by itself.
  • The top right of the page shows the date on screen, how many benches and items it has, and when it was last checked.

3Pick a court

  • The Court row lists every court sitting that day, grouped by list: Miscellaneous, Regular Hearing, Single Judge, Chamber and Registrar.
  • CJI is the Chief Justice's court. The numbers are court numbers.
  • On a phone the courts are in a dropdown instead of buttons.
  • A green dot on a court means it has posted its own hearing sequence on the display board (see section 6).
  • An orange underline means the court has matters on that day's oral mentioning list.

4Read the court box

Each court shows as one box. Its header has:

  • The court, the judges on the bench and the sitting time.
  • A Supplementary badge for supplementary lists, and a green Regular Hearing badge for regular-hearing benches.
  • The Court Master / Moderator helpline numbers for that court. Tap a number on a phone to call it.
  • VC helpline → opens the full Court Master helpline list for every court.
  • Court notes (N) — the notes printed with the list (for example, judgment matters or special directions). Click to open.
  • Oral mentioning (N) — the matters on that court's oral mentioning list. Click to open.

5Read a matter

  • Item number on the left. Connected matters (2.1, 2.2 and so on) carry a Connected tag and sit under their main item.
  • Case number, with the registry section below it.
  • Parties — petitioner, versus, respondent.
  • Advocates for the petitioner and for the respondent.
  • IAs and office notes under the matter. A Mention memo tag means one has been filed.
  • On a phone, the advocates and IAs are folded away. Tap Advocates · IAs ▾ to open them.
  • Item counts at the top count main items only, not connected matters.

6Hearing order

Each court is shown in the order it hears matters, under the Supreme Court circular F.No. 23/Judl./2026 of 9 October 2026:

  1. Matters before the first Part heading, such as For judgment.
  2. Part-A · Fresh Matters — main list, then supplementary lists.
  3. Passed-over fresh matters.
  4. Part-B · After Notice Matters — main list, then supplementary lists.
  5. Passed-over after-notice matters.

When a court posts its own sequence

  • If a court puts a hearing sequence on the SCI display board, that court is shown in the court's sequence instead. It is marked with a green dot.
  • A green banner shows the sequence as posted and the time it was posted. Items given a fixed time and pass-over points are marked.
  • Items the sequence doesn't mention are listed at the end.
  • Click Show in circular order to go back to the circular order.
  • The board is read again every 3 minutes, 9 AM to 5 PM. It is used for today only, so earlier dates always show the circular order.
  • Other board notices (not sequences) appear as a grey banner above the list.
Lists without Part headings, such as Regular Hearing lists, are shown in the printed order.

7Share or bookmark a view

  • The address bar always holds the date, court and search on screen, for example /sc/causelist/#d=2026-10-30&q=28926.
  • Copy the address to send a colleague the same view, or bookmark it to open your court straight away.
  • Add the page to your phone's home screen for one-tap access in court.

8Official PDFs and accuracy

  • Above the list, Official PDFs links to every Supreme Court PDF the page was built from. Hover over a link to see when it was published.
  • The page reads those PDFs automatically. Now and then a line can be misplaced, so for anything important, check the official PDF.
  • Spotted an error? Tell us through Feedback at the top of the page.

9If your matter isn't showing

I searched but found nothing.
  • Check the date selected in the Date row.
  • Try fewer words — just the case number and year, or the diary number.
  • Try a party's surname or the AOR code instead.
Tomorrow's list isn't there yet.

The Court hasn't published it yet. It usually comes out in the evening; the page picks it up within 15 minutes.

My matter is in the supplementary list.

Supplementary lists are included. They appear in the same court box, in their place in the hearing order, with a Supplementary badge.

The order on screen differs from the PDF.

The page arranges each court in hearing order (section 6), not the printed order. The item numbers are the same as in the PDF.
